The road to Broadway We started reported on this revival of Sweet Charity when it was headed for Broadway with a target of 2000-2001, then April 2003 then January 2004. First step toward NYC was to be tour with Paula Abdul kicking off 1999. Then the show was to star tube's Jenna Elfman as the only pixie we think could out-cute Shirley's film turn. Wayne Cilento was first mentioned to direct, then word was Walter Bobbie. Bobbie was out, then maybe still in. Marisa Tomei was attached to the show, then Jane Krakowki's name floated...

Then things started to get a bit firmer. Variety reported in March 2004 that Christina Applegate was to head the cast as the show looked toward an April 21, 2005 opening and, in Playbill, director (Again!) Walter Bobbie announced the addition of choreographer Wayne Cilento to the creative team. The show's pre-Broadway tour was scheduled for a February 2005 Minneapolis opening with stops in Chicago and Boston with Ms Applegate in the lead

Talk about taking direction. Say 'Break a leg,' and Ms Applegate does just that, well almost, as she fractured her ankle at the beginning of a Boston performance that began a roller-coaster ride. The producers pull the plug on the show; Ms Applegate gets on the phone to drum up support; the show is back on with Charlotte D'Amboise in the lead; Ms Applegate gets back on her feet and opens with her right foot in a brace. That's Broadway!

Notes Sweet Charity first appeared as a straight play at the Mansfield Theater December 28, 1942. The George Abbott headed production collapsed after eight performances. The Bob Fosse musical version starring Gwen Verdon debuted at the Palace Theater January 29, 1966 and played for 608 performances. The show had a one-year revival at the Minskoff Theater with a cast headed by Debbie Allen

Neil Simon will have three revivals on the Broadway boards in a span of nine months. In addition to Sweet Charity, The Odd Couple starts previews in October 2005 and Barefoot in the Park is due sometime January 2006
