Broadway Show History
Clifford Odett's Awake and Sing had its Broadway premiere at
the Belasco Theater in February 1935. On the boards were Luther
Adler, Stella Adler, Roman Bohnen, Phoebe Brand, JE Bromberg, Morris
Carnovsky, Jules Garfield, Sanford Meisner and Art Smith. The show
ran for 135 performances, playing through July. The same cast
returned to the same theater that September for a short repertory
run
Productions of this play seem to run in pairs. In December 1938, the
Federal Theatre Project brought its production to Daly's 63rd Street
Theater for a 95-performance run. Ending in April 1939, that played
for a month against the Group Theatre's revival of its original
production at the Windsor Theater. The Group's show brought back
many of the original cast, and Julia Adler assumed her Mother's role
as Bessie Berger
The last Broadway revival of Awake and Sing was in 1984 by
Circle in the Square Theater. Nancy Marchand stepped into Bessie
Berger's shoes (with Phyllis Newman as her standby). Sharing the
stage were Harry Hamlin, Benjamin Hendrickson, Dick Latessa, Michael
Lombard, Frances McDormand, Luke Sickle, Paul Sparer and Thomas G
