Synopsis
It's poetry jam night at the Bridge
and Tunnel Cafe in Queens where host and organizer Mohammed Ali (No,
not that one, the other Mohammed Ali.) presents a panoply of
quintessential New York City characters. Ms Jones plays each role,
using bits and pieces of wardrobe and accessories, and changes to
her voice, body, bearing and attitude to recreate a cross section of
mostly unheralded immigrant slam poets. She deftly, spookily,
captures the spirits of a crippled Mexican laborer, a Jamacain
rapper, a hobbled Long Island senior, a once Beatle-struck Jordanian
housewife, and a Chinese mother trying to reconcile herself with her
daughter's lifestyle choices, along with other most typical New York
experiences Road to Broadway
bridge and tunnel, originally produced by Meryl Streep and
the Culture Project, had an outrageously successful run at the
45 Bleecker
Theater from February through August 2005 |
