Road to Broadway
The Color Purple had a Fall 2004 run at
Atlanta's Alliance Theatre in preparation for a bow on Broadway, and
is being workshopped in NYC during Summer 2005. The production had
been aiming for "sometime" in the 2005-2006 season; the feeling here
was probably Winter or Spring. Cancellation of
The Mambo Kings made the
Broadway Theater available
and the producers went for it
Notes Steven Spielberg directed the 1985 film that starred
Danny Glover, Margaret Avery, Whoopi Goldberg in her second film
role and Oprah Winfrey in her first. The film was nominated for 11
Academy Awards including best picture, best leading actress (Ms
Goldberg), and best supporting actress (both Ms Avery and Ms
Winfrey). It came away empty handed |
