Synopsis Don't look for the
orchestra when you enter the theater for this version of Sweeney
Todd. It's the performers that get to blow their own horns (as
well as flutes, trumpets and clarinets) while they accompany the
demon barber of Fleet Street as he keeps his neighbor Mrs Lovett
supplied with the "meat" needed for her pies Notes The very first Broadway production of Sweeney Todd was a
non-musical version penned by George Dibdin-Pitt. It bowed July 16,
1924 at the now gone Frazee Theater. The 67-performance run was
headed by Raffaella Ottiano as Mrs Lovett and Robert Vivian in the
title role The musical version of
Sweeney Todd arrived at the Uris Theater February 6, 1989. The
9-time 1979 Tony Award
nominated show (with 8 winners) was helmed by Hal Prince and starred
Angela Lansbury and Len Cariou With
half the number of cast members as the original production, the 1989
revival by Circle in the
Square Theater managed to garner a handful of
1990 Tony Award nominations
(for leads Beth Fowler and Bob Gunton, plus director Susan Schulman)
and a win as best revival |
