Synopsis

Who's that sneaking 'round the corner? And why can't I get Bobby Darin's version of The Ballad of Mack the Knife out of my head this morning? Macheath is the neer-do-well slithering through the underside of 1830s London. He courts and marries young Polly Peachum, is entrapped by her parents, faces the gallows, is reprieved by the queen and goes on the live the life of a young nobleman

Broadway Show History

Threepenny Opera had a rather inauspicious Broadway debut at the Empire Theater in April 1933. Francesco Von Mendelssohn, in his directorial debut, directed a cast of more than 40 performers in a production that ran for 12 performances. About the only interesting tidbit is a young Burgess Meredith as a member of Macheath's gang

The defining production of Threepenny Opera in American musical history had a split engagement at the Theatre de Lys. A short run in the Spring of 1954, preceded a 2,611 performance engagement from September 1955 to December 1961. Directed by Carmen Capalbo, the cast was headed by Scott Merrill, Jo Sullivan, Frederic Downs, Jane Connell and Lotte Lenya. Ms Lenya won the 1956 Tony® as best featured actress in a musical. And, for a bit of triva, Bea Arthur made her Broadway debut in the role of Lucy Brown

With 1966 came the Swedish marionette version of the show at the Billy Rose Theater. 'Nuff said

Richard Foreman (apt name for a director) helmed a 306-performance production starring Raul Julia and Caroline Kave at the Vivian Beaumont Theater beginning in May 1976. This New York Shakespeare Festival revival was nominated for five 1977 Tony Awards®

In October 1989, Sting took to the Lunt-Fontanne Theater stage as Macheath in an 65-performance revival. Georgia Brown was nominated for a 1990 Tony® for her portrayal of Mrs Peachum opposite Alvin Epstein's Mister, Maureen McGovern appeared as young Polly, with Suzzanne Douglas as Jenny
