Synopsis

One of the great plays about the American experience is set in a rundown tavern near Boston owned by Con Melody. A very well-bred, distinguished gentleman, Con had a bit of trouble  during the Peninsular War. Besides destroying much of Iberian society, the wars destroyed Con's career -- and image. Con brought his wife Nora and daughter Sara to America to get a fresh start, continuing to portray himself, despite his situation, as the gentleman he once was. To cut to the chase, this becomes an almost Irish-American version of Romeo and Juliet: Sara falls for the son of a rich neighbor; the neighbor says "Fuggedaboudit!" Con, intending to change the situation, finds unintended consequences

Broadway Show History

Eugene O'Neill's A Touch of the Poet had its Broadway bow at the Helen Hayes Theater in October 1958. Aptly, Helen Hayes starred opposite Eric Portman. The play and featured actress Kim Stanley garnered 1959 Tony Award® nominations

There was a short revival in repertory by the American National Theatre at the ANTA Playhouse in 1967. A 141-performance run in 1977, again at the Helen Hayes Theater, starred Jason Robards and Geraldine Fitzgerald. Mr Robards was nominated for the 1978 Tony Award® as best actor for his performance
