Synopsis
The Woman in White is a tale that starts with a chance
encounter one night in 1850s England. A gentlemen strolling back to
his chambers is accosted by a woman dressed in, well, white.
Distressed, the woman is trying to make her way back to London.
After seeing the woman into a carriage, the gentlemen next
encounters two men searching for a woman in white who has escaped
from an asylum

Show History
The Woman in White the novel was written by Wilkie
Collins. First published in 1860 it became the toast of London town
and spurred what were some of the earliest tie-in products such as
cloaks, bonnets, perfumes, even songs and dances. There have been a
few stage productions derived from the novel, one authored by Mr
Collins in 1870, but nothing very substantial. There have been
numerous film versions of the story dating back to a US production
in 1912. None are memorable, though a 1948 version starring Alexis
Smith, Eleanor Parker, Sydney Greenstreet, Gig Young and Agnes
Moorehead might be worth a peek
Andrew Lloyd Weber's musical version of The Woman in White
premiered at London's Palace Theatre to very good reviews. The
production garnered five Olivier Award nominations (musical, actress
in a musical, supporting performance in a musical, set design &
sound design), though it went away empty handed |
