Synopsis
Talk about a bad day. Ben Butley, a
professor of English lit, is already the type of guy that the dank
British weather just makes more bitter and withdrawn. His wife tells
him she's going off to marry a mutual friend, then his lover hits
him with the news that he's off to join another man. Just how does
one keep his sense of humor amidst all of this?
Broadway Show History
Butley debuted on Broadway at
the Morosco Theater in October 1972. Directed by James Hammerstein,
the show played a respectable 135-performance run. Alan Bates took
home the 1973 best actor in a play

for his performance in the title role. Holland played wife Anne
Butley and Haywardd Morse was nominated as best feature actor for
his portrayal as Butley's lover Joey
