Synopsis
The Coram Hospital for Deserted
Children was established by royal charter in 1739. The play starts
three years later as it follows the story of two teenaged boys, one
well bred, one less so, who are discovering the joy of music. At
least one also discovers the joy of a young woman. A baby is born
and the young mother is told it is dead
Intertwined with this plot is a
second, in which desperate mothers pay men to bring unwanted or
can't be supported boys to the foundling home. Many do not make it
there, victims of work-house cruelty
Eight years later the story follows
two "Coram boys" in search of their parents
The Road to Broadway
Coram Boy came to Broadway
after two hugely successful
engagements at London's National Theater,
November 2005 to February 2006 and
November 2006 to January 2007
