The Road to Broadway
Sometimes it just takes a little patience
In August 2004, the New
York Times seemed pretty firm in its report of a Short one-man
show hitting the boards sometime during the Spring 2005 season. No
title (later given If I'd Saved, I Wouldn't Be Here: Martin
Short on Broadway) and little detail, though a quote by Mr Shaiman intimated
Short "acting like Judy Garland." No boas, we hoped; there
are already too many of them around the cabaret circuit
And it was an "Ooops!" Playbill
reported in September 2004 that the show "does not yet have a
title" and was now scheduled to deb Fall 2005. Some time passed
with no word, we re-jiggered our projection to sometime during the 2005-2006 season
Then, in June 2005, when
Broadway
in Boston announced its upcoming season, there was the Martin
Short production slated for a two-week run starting October or
November. It was billed as a pre-Broadway tryout expected for Spring
2006. For some reason (possibly the filming of Santa Claus 3),
it didn't make it to Boston and was cancelled
Finally, the New York Times reported in February 2006, that
the show was re-titled as indicated above and due to hit
Broadway on August 10th at the infamous "venue to be named." Stops
along the way include a run in April 2006 at San Francisco's
Curran Theatre, followed by a May booking at Toronto's
Canon Theater, and July performances at
Chicago's LaSalle Bank Theatre
