Broadway Show History

Prelude's Broadway premiere was at the Helen Hayes Theater on May 1, 1990. The 1991 Pulitzer Prize winning play was on the boards for 440 performances. Timothy Hutton, Mary-Louise Parker and Barnard Hughes led a cast that also included Larry Bryggman, John Dossett and Debra Monk

Alec Baldwin and Meg Ryan starred in the 1992 screen version directed by Norman Rene. Sydney Walker played Julius (the Old Man), Ned Beatty and Patty Duke played Dr and Mrs Boyle, and Stanley Tucci played Taylor. Debra Monk, who appeared as Mrs Boyle in the original Broadway production, played Aunt Dorothy for this go round. Mr Rene directed the play's 1988 world premiere at the South Coast Repertory, as well as its successful 1990 off-Broadway run at the Circle Repertory and the transfer to the Helen Hayes.
