Synopsis
Radio Golf is the tenth and
final work of August Wilson's Pittsburgh Cycle. The cycle of plays
chronicles the lives of the black residents of Pittsburgh's Hill
District neighborhood from the 19-double-oughts through the 1990s,
the focus of this play
It's all about "Blight, blight,
blight, blight, blight!"
Harmond Wilks, real estate man,
developer and freshly minted politician, is involved in a project
with friend Roosevelt Hicks to revitalize a piece of this blighted
neighborhood. A high-end residential building will be girdled with
the usual mall-type national retail chain stores
All such developments in all big
cities are subject to the vagaries of politics, race, financing
In this case history and culture and
a 300-year-old black woman play a hand
The Road to Broadway
Radio Golf premiered at the
Yale Repertory
Theatre in a three-week engagement beginning April 22, 2005.
Richard Brooks appeared as Harmond, Michele Shay as Mame, Anthony
Chisholm as Elder Joseph Barlow, John Earl Jelks as Sterling Johnson
and James A Williams as Roosevelt Hicks
The play proceeded to a six-week run
at Los Angles'
Mark Taper Forum August through September 2005. Rocky Carroll
and Denise Burse played Harmond and Mame Wilks as Messrs Chisholm,
Jelks and Williams reprised their roles from the Yale Rep production
as they would through all of the productions through the run at the
Cort
Next up was a one-month run from
January 19 to February 18, 2006 at the
Seattle Rep with the same cast as the Mark Taper engagement
The same cast is then on to
Baltimore's
CenterStage in April 2006. In that Fall's presentation by
Boston's
Huntington Theatre Company (September 8 through October 15,
2006), Harmond and Mame were played by Hassan El-Amin and Michole
Briana White, with Eugene Lee as Stirling Johnson
The same cast was on the boards when
Radio Golf was staged at Chicago's
Goodman
Theatre from January 13 to February 18, 2007
The sixth and last tune-up at
Princeton's McArter Theater (March 18 through April 8, 2007)
included Harry Lennix and Tonya as Harmond and Mame among the
Broadway bound cast, three of which were with the show from its
inception two years earlier
