Synopsis
An Italian woman, a German woman and
an American woman are sitting at a bar...
That could be the start of an old
joke and in many ways it is. In this case, architect Bernard is
friends with three flight attendants, Gabriella, Gretchen and
Gloria. Actually a bit more than friends as each of the women
happens to be his fiance. Bernard and his housekeeper Berthe are
able to juggle the comings and goings of the three with proper prior
planning. Until fate steps in
Fate is a new, faster jet that
upsets all of B & B's machinations to keep the girls apart. Throw in
other unforeseen circumstances, help from Bernard's old friend
Robert, Berthe's I've-had-it-up-to-here attitude, and we have the
setting for the classic farce
Broadway Show History
Boeing-Boeing's Broadway
premiere was a bit inauspicious. After opening February 2, 1965 at
the Cort Theater the production only staged 23 performances. Most of
the people involved in the production were unheralded then and
unheralded now. Produced by Martin Lee and directed by Jack Minster,
the show's cast included Gerald Harper as Bernard, Maureen Pryor as
Berthe and Ian Carmichael as friend Robert. The flight attendant
fiancees were played by Susan Carr, Diana Millay and Joanna Morris.
And for whatever reason, in this production they were changed to the
three Js: Jacqueline, Janet and Judith
In the Movies
The 1965 screen version of Boeing
was directed by John Rich. Tony Curtis and Jerry Lewis starred as
Bernard and Robert, supported by the perfectly cast Thelma Ritter as
Bertha. The fiances -- in this version Jacqueline, Lisa and Vicky --
were played by Dany Saval, Christiane Schmidtmer and Suzanne Leigh |
