Synopsis
It's the '50s. It's the T-Birds and
Pink Ladies at Rydell High. It's Danny Zuko and Sandy Dumbrowski in
the confusion of high school love
Broadway Show History
After a sold out 128 performances at
2nd Avenue's Eden Theater between February 14 and June 4, 1972,
Grease's Burger Palace Boys and Pink Ladies transferred to the
Broadhurst
Theater for its Broadway bow. After opening at the Broadhurst
June 7th, the production transferred to the
Royale Theater
November 21st, playing there until January 27, 1980. The last few
months of its 3,388 performance life, at that time the longest in
Broadway history, was at the
Majestic
Theater, from January 29 to April 13, 1980
Barry Bostwick played Danny Zuko
opposite Carole Demas' Sandy Dumbrowski, with Alan Paul as Teen
Angel. Also on the boards that evening were Adrienne Barbeau as
Betty Rizzo, Timothy Meyers as Kenickie and Walter Bobbie as Roger.
During the show's long run many actors played Danny, among them Jeff
Conaway, Patrick Swayze and Treat Williams. Marilu Henner appeared
as Marty, Judy Kaye as Betty Rizzo, John Travolta as Doody and Jerry
Zaks as Kenickie
The show was nominated for seven Tony
Awards® in 1972: best musical, book, costume design (Carrie F
Robbins), choreography (Patricia Birch), actor (Barry Bostwick),
featured actor (Timothy Meyers) and featured actress (Adrienne
Barbeau)
In many ways success breeds success.
Fourteen years after the original production closed, Grease
returned to the boards at the Eugene O'Neill Theater on May 11, 1994
for another 1,505 performances. Ricky Paul Goldin played Danny Zuko
and Susan Wood played Sandy Dumbrowski. Marcia Lewis appeared as
Miss Lynch, Rosie O'Donnell as Betty Rizzo, Hunter Foster as Roger
and, in her Broadway bow, Megan Mullally appeared as Marty. The
Betty Rizzo character became the show's "hook" as the producers
brought in "names" for the role to attract audiences
This production was nominated for
three 1994 Tonys®: best
revival, featured actress (Marcia Lewis) and choreography (Jeff
Calhoun)
