Synopsis

A musical play in two distinctively different acts

Just a typical Sunday in the park, people strolling or boating, young folks flirting. Amidst this leisurely activity is George Seurat, at work on a large scale painting of the Island of La Grande Jatte. His new technique, pointillism, is criticized, not in a good way, and George turns in on himself, intent on finishing the painting. He realizes as he does that he is isolating himself from those around him

As day turns to eve there are dust-ups among the people in the park. The hubbub spreads until George acts and places all the park visitors into his composition

Stuck in what will soon be acknowledged as a masterpiece

Act the second usually discombobulates audiences. One hundred years later George's great grandson, a multimedia artist now working in the States, gets inspiration from his grandmother Marie to continue his work. Traveling to La Grande Jatte to shows his new work, Cromolume #7 (a machine that does something or other with light), notes made by Dot help him come to terms with his art -- and himself

Broadway Show History

Sunday first opened on Broadway on May 2, 1984 at the Booth Theater. Directed by the playwright James Lapine, the production starred Mandy Patinkin as George and Bernadette Peters as Dot/Marie. Featured were Charles Kimbrough (Jules/Bob), Dana Ivey (Yvonne/Naomi), and Barbara Byrne (Old Lady/Blair). The musical play won the 1985 Pulitzer Prize for Drama and was nominated for 10 1984 Tony Awards®, winning two, for scenic and lighting design

On Television

Taping started on a broadcast version just about a week after the original production closed in October 1985 and was telecast on both Showtime and PBS' American Playhouse in 1986. Most of the actors reprised their roles, including Mr Patinkin and Ms Peters
