Synopsis
From the producers:
"Xanadu follows the journey of
a magical and beautiful Greek muse, Kira, who descends from the
heavens of Mt. Olympus to Venice Beach, California in 1980 on a
quest to inspire a struggling artist, Sonny, to achieve the greatest
artistic creation of all time - the first ROLLER DISCO…hey, it's
1980! But, when Kira falls into forbidden love with the mortal
Sonny, her jealous sisters take advantage of the situation and chaos
abounds"
The Road to Broadway
Not a long nor hard road. A couple of
readings in Summer 2006, workshop in January 2007, open on Broadway
four months later. Jane Krakowski and Cheyenne Jackson were slated
to star but other commitments got in the way. Jackson would later
return to replace James Carpinello
In the Movies
The 1947 film Down to Earth,
starring Rita Hayworth as Terpsicore, was the inspiration for 1980's
Xanadu, the film that inspired the stage musical. Olivia
Newton-John played Kira, Michael Beck played Sonny and Gene Kelly
played Danny McGuire
