Synopsis

An American farce. When is old too old, or young too young, to love

A playwright's latest work about a middle-aged man and much younger woman spurs a succession of incidents among Steven, Genevieve and Linda, the two young women in his life, and Dickie, who maybe he doesn't want in his life. But he's really not sure

Some years earlier it was Steven and Genevieve, the relationship now renewed. Then suddenly, it's Steven and Linda, once his secretary, now the leading lady in his new play. Now it's Linda and Dickie. Or maybe not. Maybe it's Linda and Steven again. Or maybe Steven wants it to be Dickie and Linda. And then it's Steven alone

For a Time

Broadway Show History

Accent on Youth's only other Broadway staging was back in 1934. Opening on Christmas Day, it featured Nicholas Hannen as Steven Gaye, Constance Cummings as Linda Brown, Theodore Newton as Dickie Reynolds and Irene Purcell as Genevieve Lang

In the Movies

There are three different film versions of Accent. The first was released in 1935 and directed by Wesley Ruggles. Herbert Marshall played Steven, Sylvia Sydney as Linda, Phillip Reed as Dickie and Astrid Allwyn as Genevieve

Bing Crosby starred in a 1950 musical version titled Mr Music. The lead character is now a song writer who goes broke because he spends all of his time playing golf

And now it's Russ and Ellie when Clark Gable and Carroll Baker star in 1959's But Not for Me. Very similar to the stage play with some complications from the musical version thrown in for good measure. With Lilli Palmer as Kathryn Ward (Genevieve) and Barry Coe as Gordon Reynolds (Dickie)
