Synopsis
Psychiatrist Dr Martin Dysart tries
to fathom what drove a young man to attack and blind six horses. The
journey uncovers a life filled with religious and sexual guilt,
contradictions and substitutions

Equus debuted on Broadway
Thursday, October 24, 1974 at the
Plymouth
Theater. The John Dexter-directed production played 1,209
performances, a phenomenal run for a straight play, split between
the Plymouth and the Helen Hayes Theater
Anthony Hopkins played Martin Dysart
with Peter Firth as Alan Strang. Roberta Maxwell appeared as Jill
Mason, Marian Seldes as Hesther Saloman, while Frances Sterhagen and
Michael Higgins portrayed Dora and Frank Strang
The production was nominated for five
1975 Tony Awards®. It won for best play and Mr Dexter's direction
