Synopsis
Having had to abdicate the Scottish
throne, Mary Stuart seeks Elizabeth's help in regaining her Queen of
Scots title. Elizabeth realizes Mary might have a claim on her own
thrown and has her imprisoned in an English castle. Mary is
eventually tried and convicted of treason and faces a death
sentence. Court intrigue follows. Elizabeth weighs signing the
execution order against the political consequences. Mary refuses to
bend to Elizabeth's will. Facing pressure from all sides, Elizabeth
finally signs the order
Broadway Show History
This is the fourth Mary Stuart
to play Broadway. The first debbed at the Fifth Avenue Theater
February 26, 1900. There were a bunch of folks on the stage, though
their roles and who produced the show is unknown
There was a 1957 production by T
Edward Hambleton at the Phoenix Theater that the
Internet Broadway Database credits as a Broadway run. As the
theater was located on the Lower East Side that doesn't sound quite
right. But as Irene Worth played Mary opposite Eva Le Gallienne's
Elizabeth, it sure as heck is worth a mention
The Repertory Theatre of Lincoln
Center staged a 44-performance revival at Vivian Theater in 1971.
Opening on November 12th, the production starred Salome Jens as Mary
and Nancy Marchand as Elizabeth. And, before their days of fame and
fortune, Philip Bosco played Robert Dudley and Richard Kline
appeared as One of the Guards, Courtier, Gentlewoman
