Synopsis
It's the Fifties. It's Sweet Apple,
Ohio. It's Elvis! Oops, nope, it's teen idol and heartthrob Conrad
Birdie come to town to deliver a special performance before he
enters the Army
Broadway Show History
It's hard for us to imagine that a show that has entered Broadway's
consciousness as deeply as Birdie, has not had a revival
since it first opened almost 50 years ago. It was April 14, 1960, a
Thursday evening at the
Martin
Beck Theater, when Chita Rivera and Dick Van Dyke took the stage
in the lead roles of Rose Grant and Albert Peterson. They were
joined by Dick Gautierv (Conrad Birdie), Paul Lynde (Mr MacAfee),
Kay Medford (Mae Peterson) and a young Charles Nelson Riley making
his Broadway bow as Mr Henkel. The production was nominated for
eight 1961 Tony Awards®,
bringing home four. The show was recognized as the best musical, Mr
Van Dyke as the best featured actor in a musical, and Mr Champion
for best direction and choreography
