Synopsis
We're in Rainbow Valley, Missitucky,
somewhere in the deep South. Irish immigrant Finian McLonergan
buries a pot of gold in the hopes that it will grow. Of course, the
leprechaun from whom it was stolen would like it back; he might stay
a leprechaun without it. This whimsical premise is the basis for
exploring and satirizing bigotry and other preconceptions
Broadway Show History
The original Broadway production of Finian's Rainbow opened
at the
46th Street Theater on Friday, January 10, 1947. The cast
included Albert Sharpe as Finian and Ella Logan as Sharon. David
Wayne won the 1947 Tony®
Award for best featured actor in a musical for his portrayal of
Og, Michael Kidd bringing home the hardware for best choreography
(shared with Agnes Demille for Brigadoon). This was the first
year of the awards and the first of five Tonys® Mr Kidd would
receive for choreography
Rainbow had two short-run revivals produced by the New York
City Center Light Opera Company. City Center itself hosted the May
1995 revival and the 46th Street Theater was home to the May-June
1960 version. Interestingly, Anita Alvarez played Susan Mahoney in
each of the first three productions
In what appears to be his only Broadway appearance, a young Merv
Griffin played Woody Mahoney in the 1955 production. An even younger
Robert Guillaume appeared as the Second Geologist in 1960
Notes
Back in 1998 we listed a possible Finian revival for Fall
2000 or Winter 2001. Lonny Price was to direct Brian Murray, August Pendleton
and
Kate Jennings, with Marguerite Derricks as choreographer. One
credit, to our eyes curious, was Peter Stone for "revised book."
After successful out-of-town turns in Florida and Cleveland the show
was to play Los Angeles while waiting for a Broadway house, then lack of
financing stalled its plans
