Synopsis The oft-performed classic based on
the complicated relationship of a dedicated young teacher, Annie Sullivan, and
Helen Keller, her deaf and blind pupil
Broadway Show History
Anne Bancroft and
Patty Duke originated the roles of Annie Sullivan and Helen Keller
October 19, 1959, at the now gone Playhouse Theater. Directed by
Arthur Penn, the show ran for a staggering 719 performances and
garnered six
1960 Tonys®
including best play, best actress for Ms Bancroft and best direction
for Mr Penn. Surprisingly, the current production is the first Broadway
revival of the show
The last attempt to bring a revival
of The Miracle Worker to Broadway was in 2003. The Marianne
Elliott-directed production starred Hilary Swank and was to open at
the Music Box Theater on April 24, 2003. Schedules were up and
tickets were going to go on sale when the producers pulled the plug
at the last minute
In the Movies
It didn't take too long after the
original staging closed in July 1961 for the story to reach the
silver screen. Mr Gibson adapted his stage play for the screen and
Mr Penn directed the 1962 film version
Ms Bancroft and Ms Duke reprised
their roles as Annie and Helen and earned Oscars for their efforts
