Synopsis
A comedy of manners on Manhattan's
East Side with "To wed or not to wed?" as the question. That is,
whether or not to wed someone outside of show business. The
characters of Tony and Fanny Cavendish are take-offs on John and
Ethel Barrymore and the royal lifestyles enjoyed by the leading
stage actors of the '20s
Broadway Show History
The Royal Family had its first
run on Broadway at the Selwyn Theater, opening on December 28, 1927.
Directed by David Burton, the show ran for 345 performances and
featured Haidee Wright and Otto Kruger as Fanny and Tony Cavendish,
Ann Andrews as Julie, Katherine Calhoun Doucet and Orlando Daly as
Kitty and Herbert Dean, Joseph King as Gilbert Marshall and
Jefferson D Angelis as Oscar Wolfe
The 1951 revival ran at City Center
for 15 performances, from January 10th to the 27th
Rosemary Harris, who portrays Fanny
Cavendish in the current revival, played daughter Julie in the 1975
revival. She, along with Eva Le Gallienne as Fanny and George
Grizzard as son Tony, took to the boards of the old Helen Hayes
Theater on December 30th of that year. The show was nominated for
three 1976 Tonys®: Ms
Harris as best actress, Ann Roth for costumes with Ellis Rabb
winning for direction. Tidbit: Ms Harris and Mr Rabb were married
from 1959 until their divorce in 1967
