Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark
Broadway Musical Previews
February 25 2010
Opens March ?21? 2010 Note
Over the past few months there have been reports that Spidey might
be a little late to Broadway. Probably not March, possibly not
April, maybe 2010-2011 instead. As usual, money is the root of all
problems. The Producer team was revamped November 2009 to try to
solve the problems On January 12th producers
confirmed that the show is delayed and that tickets can be refunded
(or exchanged when new dates are announced, possibly Fall 2010) through Ticketmaster
Evan Rachel Wood, who was slated to play Mary Jane Watson, announced
in March 2010 that she had to leave the show due to a scheduling
conflict. Casting notices for a new Mary Jane appeared late March
2010; chorus calls went out mid-April
And then in April the scheduling conflict but bit again as Alan
Cumming, set to play Norman Osborn / The Green Goblin, was forced to
withdraw from the show

Synopsis
Local boy, orphaned, makes good!
Peter Parker, a brilliant tech wiz from Queens, is often the butt of
abusive bullying by his classmates. A bite from a gentically-altered
spider gives him superhuman, spider-like powers, which soon go to
his head. A very personal tragedy, partly of his own making, makes
him realize that "with great power come great responsibility"
Parker grows in both his personal
life and as Spider-Man, battling villains and vanquishing foes. The
show's producers promise "new characters as well as familiar faces
until a final surprising confrontation casts a startling new light
on this hero's journey"
On Television
Spider-Man has been all around the
television landscape since 1967 when an animated series began on the
ABC network; it ran through 1970.
Other animated ventures included
Spidey Super Stories, which were segments on The Electric
Company educational show; a 1981 Spider-Man series that
produced 26 episodes; another 1981 outing, Spider-Man and His
Amazing Friends produced 24 episodes and initially aired on NBC;
1999 brought a one season Spider-Man Unlimited to the Fox
network; a 13-episode "New" animated series aired on MTV in 2003,
followed by the "Spectacular" series airing on the CW starting in
2008
A single live-action series has been
produced. Fourteen episodes of The Amazing Spider-Man,
starring Nicholas Hammond, aired on CBS between 1977-79
In the Movies
You might have heard of a little
film, aptly titled Spider-Man, that opened back in 2002. Toby
Maguire played Peter Parker with William Dafoe as arch-nemesis the
Green Goblin. It earned $403 million in North America alone that
year
That much money ensured there would
be a sequel. Sure enough, Spider-Man 2 came along in 2004.
Toby Maguire again played Spidey, this time facing off against
Alfred Molin as Dr Otto Octavius
And again in 2007. What do we call
this one? I dunno, let's just put a "3" at the end and keep it
simple. But not too simple. Spidey (Maguire again), now faces three
villains: the New Goblin (James Franco), Flint Mark (Thomas Haden
Church), and Venom (Topher Grace)
Tidbit: Rosemary Harris, acclaimed
and revered star of the theater, appeared as Peter Parker's Aunt May
Parker in all three films
Notes
The Spider-Man character was created
by Stan Lee and Steve Ditko. It first appeared in Amazing Fantasy
issue number 15, published by Marvel Comics in August, 1962.
Spidey's first appearance in a self-named title was The Amazing
Spider-Man issue number 1 in March 1963
The original plots had Peter Parker
bitten by a "radioactive" spider, fitting in 1962. The Ultimate
Spider-Man comic book series introduced the genetically-altered
spider in 2000. That version is also used in the film series
