Synopsis

Rodolpho is "not right," Eddie Carbone tells his niece Catherine as he sees her falling in love with the young Italian immigrant

The scene is Red Hook, the Brooklyn docks, hard by the Gowanus Canal during the gritty 1950s. Eddie and his wife Beatrice have taken in her orphaned niece Catherine, who has a young girl's view of their neighborhood.

Eddie loves Catherine, but maybe more than would be proper as a surrogate father. His opposition to Catherine's romance with Rodolpho, and subsequent decision to marry him, leads Eddie to take drastic steps to break the attraction.

It leads to tragedy

Broadway Show History

A View from the Bridge had it's Broadway debut as a one-act along with A Memory of Two Mondays, the two works sharing casts and creative. They took to the boards at the Coronet Theater on September 29, 1955, and closed 149 performances later on February 4, 1956

Van Heflin played Larry Carbone opposite Gloria Marlowe as his niece Catherine. Also among the cast were Eileen Heckart as Beatrice and a 25-year-old Jack Warden as Marco

The dual shows were nominated for two 1956 Tony® Awards, Helene Pons for costumes and Boris Aronson for sets

The first Broadway revival opened at the Ambassador Theater on February 3, 1983, again running for 149 performances, with Tony Lo Bianco playing opposite Saundra Santiago. Robert Prosky, who went on to a very successful film and television career, becoming especially popular for his work on the 1980s Hill Street Blues, appeared as Alfieri

The production received a 1983 Tony® nod as best reproduction, as did Mr Lo Bianco for best actor

Revival number two opened December 14, 1997, helmed by Michael Mayer. Produced by the Roundabout Theatre Company, the production opened at Criterion Center before transferring to the Neil Simon Theater. Anthony LaPaglia played Eddie and Brittany Murphy, Catherine. Rounding out the cast were Allison Janney in the role of Beatrice and Stephen Spinella appearing as Alfieri

Nominated for four 1998 Tonys®, the production won for best revival of a play and Mr LaPaglia went home with the award for best actor
