Synopsis
From the Summer 2008 production
notes:
"A Free Man of Color
re-creates the sexually progressive New Orleans of 1802 when the
landscape of race was shifting and the Louisiana Purchase could
complete America's unfinished maps. Featuring a host of historical
characters including Napoleon, Josephine, Jefferson, Talleyrand and
others (you name 'em, they're in it), [the play] is a racially
charged re-telling of America's coming of age"
The Road to Broadway
Free Man was announced in June
2008 to premiere at the Public Theater in early 2009 with Mos Def
and Jeffrey Wright among the cast. Just six months later the
production was postponed due to the lack of funding that hit many
cultural institutions at that time. The play was then expected to be
on the Public's 2009-2010 bill, but that apparently fell through |
