Would your strip for money? Take all your clothes off on the stage
of a fully-packed Roseland Ballroom? Each year a heck of a lot of
folks do (well, some almost do), in Broadway Bares,
where the star players and gypsies of the Great White Way strut
their stuff in support of Broadway Cares/EFA, with little -- or
nothing -- on
Director and choreographer Jerry Mitchell got the idea for Broadway
Bares back in 1991. He was among eight dancers who performed at a
bar in "rotation" to garner eight thousand bucks for Broadway Cares.
The take has risen over the years, with Bares 14 in 2004 raking in
more than five hundred grand
The show has morphed over the years. From eight guys dancing on a
bar back in '91, it is no longer a "Hey, let's put on a show," but
an elaborate presentation with scripted pieces; acrobatics; vocal
presentations; dance, dance and more dance; and still, of course,
the "rotation"
The theme for the 16th running is Strip-aThon 2006. Scheduled
to appear -- but with no promises as to what you might or might not see
-- are some of the hottest lights on Broadway, and gypsies from all over.
Announced to date are Mario Cantone, Alan Cumming, Fran Drescher,
Barrett Foa, Sara Gettelfinger, Cyndi Lauper, Dominic Nolfi, Andrew
Rannells, Daniel Reichard, J Robert Spencer, Josh Strickland and
John Lloyd Young
