There has been talk of The Mambo Kings coming to Broadway for at least a year. The show, based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning novel by Mr Hijuelos, is now the second musical, after Lennon, to announce for early in the 2005 season. What better time to catch the summer tourists?

Well, it would be an even better time if The Mambo Kings had been able to stay to course and get to Broadway. The San Francisco run was in trouble from the get go. According to the New York Post's Michael Riedel, Jerry Mitchell, Jason Robert Brown and David Ives were going to be brought in to give the staging, score and book (respectively), a thorough going over. The Roth's, Messrs Daryl and Jordan, had apparent third thoughts and decided not to spring for the dough it would have cost to rework the show

Notes The 1992 film, also directed by Mr Glimcher, starred Armand Assante and Antonio Banderas as brothers Cesar and Nestor Castillo, who leave Cuba in 1949 to make it big in New York
