Synopsis Rose needs a bit of
money but has writer's block. Her muse and lover Walsh McLaren
recommends that she finish and publish one of his uncompleted
manuscripts. Walsh didn't get a chance to finish the manuscript
because he, well, died The Road to Broadway That Wasn't
We couldn't be that Rose was aimed at
Broadway when we first listed it in January 2003, but with Simon's name on it you've got to expect that's
where it's headed. The story is about two authors who suspiciously
resemble Dashiell Hammett and Lillian Hellman (Variety says their
relationship "hangs over" the show), one dead, one
struggling, an uncompleted manuscript and some hidden relationships The show started a run at LA's Geffen
Playhouse January 2003 as Rose and Walsh. That production
starred Jane Alexander, David Aaron Baker,
Len Cariou and Marin Hinkle and was directed by David
Esbjornson. The engagement was very successful and the show appeared
to be well on its way The
Manhattan
Theatre Club version of the show began a limited run
November 24th 2003 at City
Center. Mary Tyler Moore was in previews as Rose, but many
reports said she stormed out of the theater before the December 3rd
matinee after receiving a critical letter from Mr Simon. Understudy
Patricia Hodges to assumed the role for the rest of the run
Reviews for this production were uniformly poor, putting the brakes
to any momentum it had |
